Chapter Twenty-Three

Life was all about balance. Mom used to say it was important to set aside time for yourself, to not always be about work and doing things for other people all the time.

That was why I tried to keep Sundays as ‘me’ days. These were the days when I headed to the local farmers’ market, spent time at the library finding books to read, and stopped in at my favorite cafe for a freshly made donut and latte. Sundays were days when I left my job behind and embraced life as best I could.

Armed with a list of produce from Bryce to grab at the market, I headed out for a walk, enjoying the fresh air against my face. Despite the clouded sky, I wore a large hat to protect my skin, as well as a light, long-sleeve sun shirt that paired well with jeans.

Like most other small towns, Bervie Springs came to life on the weekends, and today was no different. The sidewalks bustled with families and couples, the shops had their signs out by their doors to entice customers to stop in, and the traffic was quite heavy, which was surprising for a late Sunday morning.

“Hey, Brynn, wait up.”

Mona rushed across the street, sidestepping puddles while holding onto a coffee tray.

“I grabbed you a vanilla cream cold brew.” She handed me one of the cups.

“I thought we were going to meet for coffee.” I glanced over to Sweet Beans, our to-go coffee shop.

“I figured we’d do that after the market and library. I was chatting with Nancy, and she let it slip she’ll be making fresh choux pastry for cream puffs later, and I know how much you love those.” She tossed the tray into a recycling bin and sipped her coffee. “These will do until then.”

“These will definitely do until then, thank you.” We took our time walking down the street, window shopping along the way.

“Anything in particular you’re looking for today?” She glanced at the bags I carried. “Let me guess, Bryce gave you a list?”

“It’s a long one, too. I might see if someone can drop my bags off at the house rather than lug them around if they become too heavy.”

“I’m sure Trevor would. He’ll be there today, selling his comics and toys,” she said, winking at me.

I ignored her comment. She had been trying to hook me up with her brother for years, but that ship sailed long ago, and she knew it.

Trevor and I were friends, and that was it. We tried going on dates a few times, but the chemistry wasn’t there. Not for lack of trying, that’s for sure. Personally, I think my profession was an issue for him, not that I blamed him. Dealing with death daily wasn’t for everyone.

The town square was ahead, where the weekend market was set up. “I’m really hoping my skincare person is here this weekend. It’s been two weeks in a row I haven’t seen her.” I did a cursory glance toward the stalls I could see, but they were for honey, quilts, and fresh bread.
